Hydrogen & Oxygen Development

Hydrogen is Shopify's React framework for headless storefronts; Oxygen is the edge hosting it deploys to, included with Shopify Plus. Full frontend freedom, with Shopify still running catalogue, cart and checkout.

Where it fits

Where headless on Shopify fits

Headless is worth its cost in a handful of specific situations. Outside them, a well-built theme does the same job for less.

  1. The design outgrows Liquid

Interaction patterns, transitions and personalisation that a theme cannot express cleanly.

  2. One frontend, several channels

A single React codebase serving several storefronts, regions or app-like experiences.

  3. Content lives in a CMS

Editorial and campaign content managed in a headless CMS, moving independently of the commerce model.

  4. Your team can run a frontend

A team ready to own a separate codebase and deployment pipeline — the real cost of going headless.

Our view

What changes when you go headless

The storefront stops being Liquid templates rendered by Shopify and becomes a React application you own outright. Catalogue, cart and checkout still run on Shopify through the Storefront API, so the commercial engine is unchanged — what changes is everything in front of it.

That buys genuine freedom: interaction patterns a theme cannot express, content models that live in a separate CMS, and a frontend that can serve more than one channel from one codebase.

How we scope it

The app stack usually decides the shape of the project more than the design does. Before committing to a timeline we audit every app in use, establish which have API equivalents and which need rebuilding, and model whether a staged migration beats a single cutover.

If the answer is that a theme will do, Shopify Plus is where that work lives. See platform migration for how a move is run.

Capabilities

What we do on Hydrogen & Oxygen

Architecture, build and the operational set-up that keeps a headless storefront shippable.

  • Hydrogen storefront builds

Storefront architecture and build in React, with Shopify running catalogue, cart and checkout behind it.

  • Oxygen deployment

Environments, preview workflows and deployment set up so content and code ship safely.

  • Storefront API data layer

Queries, caching strategy and edge rendering tuned for speed under real traffic.

  • CMS integration

Content that sits outside the commerce model, connected so editors can publish without a developer.

  • App replacements

Every app audited; API-based equivalents or custom builds for anything that injected into theme templates.

  • Staged migration

The highest-value templates go headless first, with the rest of the theme following once the pipeline is proven.

Headless moves complexity, it does not remove it

You gain frontend control and take on a deployment pipeline, a separate codebase, and an app ecosystem that no longer works by dropping snippets into templates. For some brands that is clearly worth it. For many, a well-built theme on Shopify Plus delivers the same commercial result for a fraction of the ongoing cost — and we would rather say so in discovery than eighteen months into a build.

Services

What we deliver on Hydrogen & Oxygen

The same services run across our platforms. These are the ones Hydrogen & Oxygen projects most often need.

How it runs

How a Hydrogen & Oxygen project runs

  1. App and template audit

Every app in use checked for an API equivalent, and every template ranked by the value of taking it headless.

  2. Architecture

Data layer, caching, CMS and deployment model decided, including whether a staged migration beats a single cutover.

  3. Build in stages

Highest-value templates first, shipped through Oxygen environments with previews for every change.

  4. Launch and support

Cutover, performance monitoring against the old storefront, then ongoing development on the same pipeline.

Frequently asked questions

What is Shopify Hydrogen?

Hydrogen is Shopify's React framework for building headless storefronts. It reads commerce data through the Storefront API rather than rendering Liquid templates, so the frontend is a React application you control completely while cart, checkout and catalogue stay on Shopify.

What is Oxygen?

Oxygen is Shopify's hosting for Hydrogen storefronts, running at the edge across a global network. It is included with Shopify Plus, which removes the separate hosting bill and DevOps burden that headless builds normally carry.

When is headless actually worth it?

When you need frontend behaviour Liquid genuinely cannot express, when one frontend has to serve several channels, or when design and content workflows need to move independently of the commerce platform. If a well-built theme meets your needs, headless adds real cost for little return — we will say so.

When is headless the wrong choice?

When the team has no appetite for running a separate frontend deployment pipeline, when the site is primarily catalogue browsing a theme handles well, or when speed to launch outweighs frontend flexibility. Headless moves complexity from the platform to your team; that trade has to be worth making.

Does headless break Shopify checkout or apps?

Checkout stays on Shopify, so it keeps working and keeps its optimisations. Apps are the real constraint — anything that injects into theme templates will not appear on a Hydrogen frontend and needs an API-based equivalent or a custom build. Auditing the app stack is part of scoping.

Can we move to Hydrogen in stages?

Often yes. A common path is to take the highest-value templates headless first — homepage and landing pages — while the rest stays on the theme, then migrate further once the pipeline is proven. It de-risks the move considerably compared with a single cutover.
